'Burning matches'

I remember an analogy from reading about cycling tours of ‘burning matches’ to indicate a rapid or precise increase in effort or result. You will run out of matches and burn out if you don’t pace yourself, but can manage increased ability for short periods.


It feels similar to my circumstance in trying to write some philosophical ideas from scratch.


You need to pace yourself but can best be worked at in bursts, or it is so that this has worked for me.
